Potters No Longer With Us
Potters No Longer With Us
Potters No Longer With Us CAPE TIMES ARTICLE : September 13 2011 at 01:03pm SEVENTY-SEVEN thousand years ago on a cold, wet Western Cape winter’s day, a local potter was sheltering in her cave at Blombos on the south coast near Klein Kliphuis. She picked up a piece of clay-like ochre, and scratched on the surface an abstract rendering of the rain slashing down outside. This object survived and is the oldest known art work in the world. .......

Highlights from the first Jakarta ceramic biennale
Highlights from the first Jakarta ceramic biennale
In 1976, the late Indonesian ceramist Hildawati Soemantri broke through all conventions by holding an installation, the first ever in Jakarta, consisting of broken ceramic parts to reveal life’s fragile state. But while she proved ceramics to be a worthy medium for personal expression, it has remained in the backseat of contemporary art.

blue and white ceramics were known as Kraak ware, apparently from the Dutch pronunciation of the Portuguese word caracca, a merchant ship
CHINOISERIE is a slightly quaint term, carrying with it a flavour of the rococo, of rather precious 18th-century interior design inspired by an image of China that bore as little relation to reality as Marie Antoinette's dairy to the farms of contemporary France. In fact, however, Chinoiserie in the narrow sense is only a phase in the long story of Europe's fascination with the most distant and mysterious of the world's great civilisations.
